Every year, CHOC Walk in the Park brings families, friends, and entire communities together to support a single cause – the effort to raise funds for health care programs, education and research for children across Southern California.
At Ruby’s Diner, the health and well-being of children is a cause near and dear to our hearts that originated with our namesake Ruby Cavanaugh’s love for children. This is why Ruby’s Diner is proud to have supported CHOC Children’s as a CHOC Walk in the Park Silver Sponsor this year! We had a wonderful time at the walk and were so happy to have been able to share the experience with our Ruby’s Diner team members, friends, and guests.
On Sunday, August 27, 2017, our team of fundraisers gathered in the dark of the morning to don our team shirts and snap a quick group photo. From there, red and white balloons in hand, we trekked through Downtown Disney and through the Disneyland gates onto Main Street U.S.A. for the CHOC Walk in the Park Opening Ceremony. When the confetti burst into the air and the walk officially started, the crowd let out a cheer and began to march forward. Together, our team trekked through Disneyland past Sleeping Beauty’s castle, through the various lands, and back down Main Street before heading into California Adventure. Along the way, we waved at princesses, heroes, and many more of our favorite Disney® characters as they cheered us on. It was a great time!
This year, we’re so happy to say that CHOC Walk in the Park raised a collective $2,300,000 for CHOC Children’s! These funds will go towards helping to protect the health and well-being of the children in Southern California.
One of our walkers, Michelle Hill, was one of five winners from our CHOC Walk in the Park Sweepstakes where we randomly gave away 10 free wristbands to Ruby’s Diner fans on Facebook. Michelle’s 7-year-old son, Blake, had been a patient of CHOC for several years and just spent part of his summer in the CHOC PICU to remove a brain tumor.
“We were so thankful for the outstanding care he received this summer from the amazing nurses to the volunteers who bring their dogs in to visit the kids,” Michelle shared. “We had such a special time walking with Team Ruby’s! It was an amazing experience for my son and I to be a part of and we truly can’t thank you guys enough for being such an amazing CHOC sponsor!”
Coincidentally, Michelle and Blake had planned on meeting up with friends and family at Ruby’s Shake Shack at Crystal Cove Beach before winning the tickets. After CHOC Walk in the Park, they enjoyed a relaxing afternoon sipping on shakes and enjoying burgers on the beach.
We’d like to thank Michelle, Blake and the many individuals who made up Team Ruby’s Diner at the walk this year as well as those who donated to our team goal. We couldn’t have done this without you! Walking with Team Ruby’s Diner on Sunday through Disneyland resort was nothing short of magical. We loved your enthusiasm and energy, and can’t thank you enough for joining us!
